Ah, the Friday Frolics never disappoint! Again, incredibly, Fetterman is the voice of reason on immigration, and Nate Hochman's assessment of the Biden administration "It's a state at war with its own nation" rings true.....

Does anyone know how or why Taylor Lorenz has a job? Does she really get paid for what she does? She must be from the right family or sleeping with the right person because I'm not seeing anything redeeming coming from her.

my god imagine sleeping with her? that violates the rule of "never sleep with anyone crazier than yourself" by about 6 standard deviations.

The rule is more simply stated as: "Never stick it in crazy".

I think people hate her writing so much that it drives clicks. It's the same with e.g. Rachel Maddow or that black lady with the "Simple Jack" wig whose name I forgot, more people are hate-watching clips of them on Youtube and podcasts than watch CNN.

Perhaps Sahara Dula should experience some non Western culture as Konstantin Kisin opines. I would recommend 5 years in an Ecuadorean prison or the same in a Russian gulag. Either way, she intentionally tried to kill a cop by her own admission. Prison time for her is needed, if only to keep her from trying to murder or assault other people.

“Like Trump, Hitler was also viewed as a clown, a goon who could be kept in line.” — MSNBC’s Joy Reid - unlike Joy, whose leash & collar & clown make up are easily evident upon each viewing. Anti-nausea pills recommended.

“At a baseline level, governments are supposed to ensure basic goods: Clean streets. Competent police. Functional airlines. Secure borders. Our political system isn’t just apathetic about those things. It’s actively opposed to them. It’s a state at war with its own nation.”

It's also fascinating that the same governments that fail at most of the basics while having the largest budgets ever in history deems itself competent at solving larger crises around the world. Can't organize a piss-up in a brewery but somehow they can "fix" the climate? Please...

Brad, I read the City Journal article “Funding for Failure”. My mind boggled at the enormous budgets quoted but the sentence which really blew my mind was “Naturally the California legislature is sending a new gusher of taxpayer dollars ($25 billion) to the schools to fight this truancy”. From the perspective of a non-US citizen, these numbers are staggering.

Yes, Germany spends on average 10.000€ per student which is already quite a lot considering the shitty state of public education. For the money quoted in that article every family with more than one child could probably hire a full-time tutor. The public sector is also the only place where the more money you spend the worse the outcomes.

And rich people spend that much in taxes and in addition they spend money on private schools.

I am going to join the echoes of "great post, Brad". These weekly quotes and links are by themselves worth subscribing to your substack.

I especially appreciate the weekly "Taylor Lorenz" brain farts. I had never heard of this woman until recently. Still think she may be performance artist or maybe even a bot.

"...who intentionally ran over a police officer in New York City"

I've been reading too much snark lately. I read this as 'inspirationally' instead of intentionally... I figured out my mistake after not reading 'brave' or 'stunning' after.
